Property History

• Anishinabe began as the Anishinaubag Intercultural Program in the early 1970’s
• In 1979, Rev. Fred Anderson was called to be pastor of the small Native American Lutheran congregation, St. Paul’s Ojibwa Lutheran Church. He stayed at Anishinabe for 15 years
• Summer youth camps had been in existence since the 1970’s
• With the absence of a pastor, in 1994 the functions of the church and camp diminished
• The Turtle Mountain Community College contacted the Lutheran Synod regarding their interest in the property
• The property was made available with the understanding that it remained an educational and cultural preservation center serving the Turtle Mountain Ojibwa people

Acquisition of Property

With approval from the Board of Directors and the financial assistance of Housing and Urban Development, TMCC purchased the Anishinabe Learning, Cultural & Wellness Center in April of 2002. Since purchasing the property, TMCC has completed many renovations, improvements, and repairs of the existing facilities.
