The program of study was designed based on TMCC's institutional mission, philosophy and goals with integration of the AASPN program goals and objectives. The curriculum was developed by the faculty and approved by the TMCC Academic Standard's Committee. It incorporates TMCC's basic curriculum for Associate of Applied Science degree. The curriculum is designed to meet the North Dakota State Board of Nursing Standards for Nursing Education Programs. The graduate of this program is eligible to write the national examination for licensing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN).

The mission, purpose, and philosophy of the AASPN program incorporates TMCC Institutional Philosophy, Mission and Goals by providing a diverse and cultural based education that will prepare students for community service and leadership as a practical nurse.
The mission of the Department of Nursing Associate of Science Practical Nurse (AASPN) program is to stimulate, facilitate, educate and role model the development of knowledgeable and caring practical nurses that are competent and sensitive to healthcare needs of diverse individuals. These practical nurses will be equipped to function as a part of the healthcare team within the scope of practical nursing as defined by the North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBON).
The purpose of this practical nursing program is to prepare qualified individuals with the knowledge, skills and abilities to provide basic nursing care to individuals who exhibit stable and predictable outcomes in a variety of healthcare settings. The nursing process is used under the supervision of a registered nurse, an advance practice nurse and/or a physician throughout the span with each student learning rules, demonstrating skills, and combining concepts and areas of nursing care to until ready to display competent practical nursing care. The practical nurse program prepares students to take the NCLEX-PN exam and work with them to ensure employment by mock interviewing experience, resume preparation and objectives for employment.
The philosophy reflects faculty beliefs about acquiring nursing care. It also includes faculty beliefs about nursing education. The four theoretical concepts of the nursing discipline: nursing, person, environment, and health. Nursing promotes health and healing through use of the nursing process and evidence-based practice in collaboration with the healthcare team. Practical nurses are healthcare providers and managers of patient care with stable and predictable individuals under the supervision of a registered nurse, an advanced practice nurse and/or a physician. These roles mandate the nurse be clinically competent, be a critical thinker, be an effective communicator, possess a system of personal and professional values based on ethical/legal principles, and demonstrate beginning leadership and management skills utilizing current health trends and technologies. Each person is valued as a unique, holistic, individual with bio-psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural components. Respect for the dignity and worth of each individual as well as acceptance of the inherent rights of freedom and choice are imperative in providing holistic care. Environment comprises of all of the internal and external factors that may affect the person on a day to day basis. These factors are important because of the potential impact on health. Health focuses on the balance of bio-psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural components of the individual. When all components are in harmony, the person experiences health. When health is compromised or altered, the personís position on the health-illness continuum changes. Nursing education is a journey of personal and professional growth. Education and learning is a life-long process. The process involves a mutual relationship between teachers and students whereby teachers are committed to empowering students by directing the external environment, implementing the curriculum, and modeling value. Students actively participate in the process by being open to learning and interacting appropriately with teachers, peers, and colleagues. Life-long learning involves self-direction in using current evidenced- based resources and health technology. The outcomes from adhering to lifelong learning lead to personal satisfaction and professional growth.back to top
