Carmelita is a native of Texas; she was born in Austin, and was raised in San Antonio. She is of mixed blood, Hispanic and an enrolled member of the Lipan Band of Apache. She received her bachelor’s of science from Texas A & M University, College Station, TX, in 1979. In 1991 she was employed by the North Dakota State University Cooperative Extension Service as the state 4-H youth horsemanship program director. During her tenure with the extension service, Carmelita received her Master’s in Equine Reproductive Physiology, Department of Animal and Range Sciences, at North Dakota State University (1995). Later in 2000 she was granted an emergency teaching license by the state of North Dakota to teach high school science in the Dunseith Public School district. While teaching in the classroom she completed the requirements for a secondary science teaching certificate. She entered into the doctoral program at North Dakota State University and received her PhD in Institutional Analysis/Occupational Adult Education in 2009. The title of her dissertation was: Cohort model learning communities: The tribal college perspective of best practices in teacher education.
Currently, Carmelita is the Teacher Education Department Chair who supervises teacher education faculty and staff, as well as the operation of three sponsored programs that support teacher education at TMCC. She is active on several institutional committees that address the study of science, retention, and financial aid.
Carmelita has three children: Dr. Lauren Dean Lamb, DVM, Felicia Marie Lamb, a nursing student at NDSU; and Bianca Irene, a junior pre-med student at Texas A & M University, College Station, TX.
